The district recently sent the final version of its Vision of a Graduate to the school committee for adoption. The Vision of a Graduate represents the community's collective vision for the skills our graduates should develop from PreK-12.
The year-long process to develop the Vision of a Graduate was led by a 21-member steering committee that included students, families, community, educators and leaders. During the process, the steering committee engaged nearly 2500 members of the community through surveys and in-person workshops. This led to multiple iterations of the vision leading to this final version.
The Full set of skills and competencies in our Vision of a Graduate includes:
Adaptability
I can …
- take healthy risks and use setbacks as opportunities for growth.
- show resilience by adjusting to changing circumstances and persevering toward goals despite challenges.
- demonstrate physical and mental wellness by developing my self-confidence and self-awareness
through understanding my strengths, passions, emotions, and needs.
Communication
I can …
- listen actively to build understanding.
- engage in conversations with others about a broad range of topics.
- convey ideas in multiple ways for a variety of audiences and purposes.
Collaboration
I can …
- seek diverse perspectives to broaden and deepen my understanding.
- demonstrate empathy by respecting the feelings and experiences of others.
- work with others to contribute to collective goals.
Intellectual Curiosity
I can …
- reflect on and question my own ideas and think critically about information.
- identify effective strategies to expand ideas and navigate obstacles.
- develop work through creative synthesis and ethical use of resources.
Integrity

Once adopted by the school committee we will work with our visual arts students to create a visual representation of the vision. The Vision of a Graduate will be a cornerstone of the district’s next strategy and we will be working over the next several years to align the opportunities we provide for students with this Vision of a Graduate.
Thank you to all of the community members who participated in this rich process.
